Public radio

Germany is unusual in having separate national and regional public broadcasters. The national broadcaster, Deutschlandradio, comprises two stations, Deutschlandfunk (DLF) and DeustchlandRadio Berlin (DLRB). DLF broadcasts news, talk and current affairs, whilst DLRB broadcasts classical music and cultural programmes and developed from former East German station, Stimme der DDR. The stations' history is reflected in their coverage, with DLF available on AM throughout Western Germany, whilst DLRB is available. Both stations are available on FM in both halves of Germany, though coverage is not universal. Generally, DLF coverage is better than DLRB in the West, whilst DLRB coverage is better in the East.

The bulk of public radio stations in Germany originate from the nine regional broadcasters: Bayerischer Rundfunk, Hessicher Rundfunk, MittelDeutscher Rundfunk, NordDeutscher Rundfunk, Radio Bremen, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, Saarlandishcer Rundfunk, SudwestRundfunk and WestDeutscher Rundfunk. Each broadcaster serves a single state or group of neighbouring states. Most of these broadcast five FM networks and one AM service to their respective region. The AM service varies between a simulcast of one of the FM networks, a separate service or a mixture of the two. Most broadcasters have local opt-outs on one FM network. Public radio is funded by a mixture of license fee and advertising.

Commercial radio

Commercial radio in Germany is licensed by the individual states, with a mixture of regional and city stations. There are no national stations, though a few stations are available in different parts of the country. Most German listeners have access to at least two commercial stations, with more in the major cities. Commercial radio in Germany was not introduced until the expansion of the FM band in Europe at the end of the 1980s and nearly all commercial stations broadcast on FM.

Other stations

As well as public and commercial stations, many parts of Germany also have community stations. There are also stations for UK and US forces based in Germany (a legacy of World War 2 and the Cold War) and relays of BBC World Service and Radio France International in Berlin.
