Belgium is divided into two regions, French speaking Wallonia and Dutch speaking Flanders. Brussels, in which both
languages are spoken, straddles the two. Both regions have universal coverage public radio and city based commercial
stations, many of which are grouped into networks. Commercial stations were licensed from the beginning of the 1990s. Wallonia Public radio in the Wallonia is produced by RTBF, which is license fee funded. Following a re-organisation of FM frequencies in 2004, RTBF now broadcasts five networks all on FM. The first two networks are mixed format with La Premiere News and Talk lead, and Viva Cite music led and split into four regions. Musiq 3 broadcasts classical music, Classic 21 carries adult and classic rock,while Pure FM broadcasts pop and dance music. La Premiere is also on AM, whilst Viva Cite is on also AM in the Hainault region and Pure FM is on AM in the rest of Wallonia, plugging gaps in its FM coverage. Many of the commercial networks are operated by the major French broadcasters. The main networks are Bel-RTL, Radio Contact, Radio Contact 2, Radio Nostalgie, Radio NRJ and Fun Radio. There are also a number of regional networks and local stations. Flanders Dutch speaking public radio is delivered by BRT. It is also license fee funded and broadcasts five FM networks. The first two networks are mixed format and also carried on AM. Radio 1 is News and Talk led, whilst Radio 2, which splits into five regions, broadcasts mostly oldies and easy listening music. The other stations are classical Radio Klara, youth network Studio Brussel and hit music station Radio Donna. The main commercial networks are Q-Music, Radio Contact, Contact 2, Top Radio and Radio Mango. There are also regional networks and local stations. |
